Dense coastal evergreen shrub, black cane-like stems with swollen joints rounded shiny green leaves often with insect holes caused by looper caterpillars. Peppery taste. Erect flower spikes, separate sexes, wind pollinated, fruits orange spikes eaten by pigeons, tuis. Maori used leaves medicinally.
