NZ white pine. Narrowly conical for many years, evergreen. Will tolerate very wet sites and grows in drier sites with good grass control. Tolerates shade but does best with blue sky above. Shade the trunk with shrubs to prevent sun scorch.

Subgenus Symphyomurtus. Grows from Sydney to Central Queensland within 120km of the coast. Excellent growth and form, produces a lignotuber. Timber heavy, fairly hard, coarse, even texture, easy to work, rich red moderately durable heartwood, for flooring & furniture. Flowers Dec to March. Recommend planting in early Spring after chance of frosts.

Bishop pine

Humboldt County, Nth California coast, a 2 needle pine with blue-green foliage, very prickly cones that remain closed on the tree until fire or strong heat causes them to open. Withstands salt laden winds, drought and healthier than P. radiata in Westland's wet climate. Timber marketed with radiata pine.
