Parent tree in Eastwoodhill from a Southern European provenance and 3 trees have grown on a hot dry shaley NW facing slope in our arboretum for 25 years, Straight trunk and even crown development, good for timber and shelter in a dry climate.

Japanese oak Ht 20-30m
Japan. Broadly spreading, deciduous, a major timber tree. Separated from Q. mongolica in 2006, accepted as new species. Tints of orange and red in autumn. Cold hardy.

Swamp cypress Ht 25-35m
S E & Central USA. Narrowly columnar, deciduous. Soft green foliage turns rich brown in late Autumn. Swamp tolerant but thrives on well drained soils. Timber similar to cypress. Utilise your really wet sites.

American white oak Ht 30m
Broadly columnar, deciduous. Famous for its quality timber and large size in America. NZ produced 1 year seedlings are still small compared to other oaks. They show signs of producing red autumn colours. Much in demand and rarely available.
