Mountains of Central & Southern Europe. Narrowly conical tall evergreen. Uncommon in NZ. All Abies grow best with other conifers, or on cutover conifer sites, benefitting from myccorhizal root fungi. Larix is a good partner.

N.W. Asiatic Turkey. Narrowly conical, evergreen. Grows at 1300-1800m on northerly slopes of the Kaz-Dagh. Needles densely arranged, upright cones break up on the tree. Very drought tolerant in Southern France. Healthy in Wakefield.

Western Himalayas at 2,000-3,000m. Columnar, evergreen with 40mm needles, with 2 greenish stomatal bands beneath. Early production of dark blue 14cm erect cones, turning brown and disintegrating. Rare and beautiful.
