Magnolia x soulangiana

A hybrid from the parents Magnolia denudata and M. liliflora, initially bred in France in the 1700s. It grows as a multistem large shrub or small tree, depending on how it is initially trained and pruned.

The flowers are various shades of white, pink and maroon, emerging on the bare branches in spring. The exact timing and length of the flowering varies, as does the shape of the flowers, some globular, others cup and saucer shape.

Magnolia x soulangiana is notable for its ease of cultivation, tolerance of wind and alkaline soils.

Our seedling grown plants generally flower within 4-7 years, offering an economical alternative to more expensive grafted plants, especially for mass plantings.

Magnolia stellata - Star magnolia

A superb flowering shrub, whose star shaped flowers always mean that spring has arrived.

This native of Japan grows to 2-3 meters in height, with a neat compact shape.

The white or pink flowers appear before the new bronze-green leaves, which turn deep green when fully mature, then yellow before dropping in autumn.
